Anti American rage that was allegedly triggered by a suspicious anti-Muslim video began during the wee hours of Tuesday morning and has spread all over the the middle east and to cities around the globe. First was the attack on the U.S. embassy in Cairo, then Yemen, Pakistan, an Afghan province, Lebanon and Indonesia. The protests are being orchestrated by pro Islamist groups that have even reached into the Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem. According to Gawker, the film is a 14 minute trailer for the film “Innocence of Muslims” or “Muslim Innocence”. It crudely depicts the Prophet Mohammed as a pedophile and idiot, and is filled with other insults toward Muslims. The actors complained that they were not told about the end results and that the offensive content was dubbed in after they acted out a deceptive script. The U.S. embassy in Sanaa, Yemen came under siege on Wednesday when Yemeni protesters broke through a line of security forces and marched to the embassy compound. Some witnesses said that the Yemeni security forces allowed the protesters to pass through the main gate. The protesters did not get access to the embassy, but managed to remove the embassy sign from the outer wall and set fires by lighting automobile tires. They chanted “death to America” and burned the embassy’s American flag. In Yemen, U.S.Embassy staff had already been evacuated when the violence broke out and Yemeni security forces fired water cannon and warning shots to disperse the crowd. In Libya, a mob appeared to attack and kill the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three others in Bengazi. The attack is now known to be a well-organized and well-planned attack that had no relation to the offensive film. Four individuals have been arrested and investigations continue. The President has vowed to pursue the matter until those responsible are brought to justice. The President also announced that there is a zero tolerance policy for violence against American embassies. In America, the protester’s histrionics and the video have triggered another kind of rage. First, the offending video appears to have been made under bizarre circumstances. The producer and director allegedly misdirected authorities and even the cast members by using false names and changing the nature of the video after it was filmed. Ironically, a convicted felon who claims to be an Egyptian Coptic Christian claims to have made the film. Coptic Christians are a small and very oppressed minority from Egypt, where the first violent anti-American protests started. Second, Americans are losing tolerance for middle eastern extremists. Libya is an exception where Ambassador Christopher Stevens was a highly regarded man who dedicated much of his career to helping Libya. It is also clear that the majority of Libyans are grateful to America and that an extremist group is responsible for the embassy murders. The cautionary tale is that the rising violence is the work of extremist groups with limited resources and followings. They will eventually have to stop. It is imperative that the U.S. keep a cool head and respond with intelligence rather than threat and panic. Extremist groups and armed remnants of the losing sides in the revolutions should be expected to exploit institutional weaknesses that come with structural change in the “Arab Spring” nations. The “Arab Spring” nations need to stop extremists from dictating their national agendas.
